Servomotors: A Comprehensive Guide

When delving into the realm of motors, terms like DC and induction motors are often familiar. However, the term "servomotor" doesn't pertain to a specific physical operating principle but instead signifies its actuation within a closed control loop.

What Makes Servomotors Unique?

A key distinction of servomotors lies in their ability, post-application of a supply voltage, to independently regulate torque, speed, or position without external components, thanks to an integrated servo amplifier. This sophisticated control occurs via a bus connection or digital/analogue inputs. While motors requiring an external servo amplifier are commonly termed servomotors, the combination of motor and amplifier constitutes a servo drive.

Diverse Types of Servomotors

Servomotors come in various design types, encompassing permanently excited synchronous motors, asynchronous motors, and brushed DC motors. AC servomotors, typically operated via servo amplifiers supplied directly by alternating voltage, range from single-phase to three-phase power supplies. Conversely, DC servomotors operate directly on a DC voltage of up to approximately 48 V.

Precision and Dynamic Control

Primarily utilised for controlling angles, positions, and paths, servomotors paired with a servo controller can swiftly accelerate to their rated speed, brake, and even reverse direction within milliseconds. They serve as dynamic, acceleration-optimised drive units, ensuring precision and efficiency in motion control applications.
