Small Gear Motors

What Defines a Small Gear Motor?

Discover the diverse types, applications, and key considerations for selecting small gear motors in our comprehensive guide. Elevate your understanding of these compact powerhouses for precision machinery.

Compact gear motors consolidate both the motor and gearhead within a single housing, setting them apart from motor-gearhead combinations in which these two elements are distinct entities, assembled based on specific application requirements.

Small gear motors can be designed with either a brushless motor (referred to as brushless small gear motors) or a brushed motor (known as DC small gear motors). The gearhead typically employs a planetary or spur gear configuration. Small gear motors are predominantly employed in scenarios demanding compact, low-speed drives.

When configuring these gear motors for specific applications, it is essential to consider that the output shaft may sometimes be offset from the motor's rotary axis. Other critical parameters for small gear motors encompass the gear ratio, overall efficiency, backlash, maximum output torque, maximum speed, and the maximum axial and radial shaft loads.

In modern applications, motor-gear combinations are favoured, as they provide significantly enhanced design flexibility, offering a wider array of options.

Types of Small Gear Motor

Brushed Small Gear Motors:

These motors use traditional brushed DC motors, which have a commutator and brushes to supply power to the rotor. They are simple and cost-effective but may require maintenance due to brush wear.

Our Brushed Motors

Brushless Small Gear Motors:

Brushless motors, also known as BLDC (Brushless DC) motors, eliminate brushes and commutators. They are more efficient, longer-lasting, and require less maintenance compared to brushed motors. Brushless small gear motors are often used in applications demanding high reliability and efficiency.

Our Brushless Motors

Planetary Gear Motors:

Planetary gearheads are a common choice for small gear motors. They offer high torque output, good efficiency, and compact size. These are well-suited for applications requiring precise control and a high reduction ratio.

Our Planetary Gearboxes

Spur Gear Motors:

Spur gearheads are simpler in design and provide lower reduction ratios compared to planetary gearheads. They are suitable for applications where high precision is not critical, and a more straightforward solution is sufficient.

Helical Gear Motors:

Helical gearheads use helical gears to transmit power, offering a balance between efficiency, precision, and quiet operation. They are commonly used in applications requiring smooth and quiet motion.

Right-Angle Gear Motors:

These gear motors have a right-angle configuration, which allows for compact installations in tight spaces. They often use bevel or hypoid gears to change the direction of power transmission.

Inline Gear Motors:

Inline gear motors have a linear configuration, making them suitable for applications where space is not a constraint. They often use parallel shaft or coaxial gears for power transmission.

What to Consider When Sourcing a Small Gear Motor

  1. Torque and Speed Requirements
  2. Efficiency
  3. Gear Ratio
  4. Backlash
  5. Noise and Vibration
  6. Operating Environment
  7. Mounting and Installation
  8. Duty Cycle
  9. Overload Protection
  10. Control and Feedback
  11. Power Supply

By taking these factors into account, you can select the most suitable small-gear motor for your application, ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and longevity.
