On this project, our client was an industry-leading manufacturer of energy management solutions. Operating for more than 120 years and producing advanced metering systems at the very cutting edge of the latest technologies, the client was looking for a gearmotor that would stand the test of time.
Most people don't pay much thought to how energy consumption within our homes or businesses is actually measured; however, ensuring accurate metering is vital for both energy providers and consumers. Using our expertise in the design and creation of DC gearmotors for the smart metering industry, we were able to produce a solution that suited the design of their new product.

The final application & solution
The client had meticulously designed a smart meter to allow utility companies to measure and predict demand. Our intelligently designed DC gearmotor works to ensure accurate measurement while also providing essential longevity.
A smart meter is primarily a way for a utility company to measure a home's energy use and to predict and prepare for spikes in demand. They can also be used to enforce pay-as-you-go supply plans by disconnecting power when a quota, set remotely by the utility company, is reached.
This application requires a specialised planetary motor/gearbox with very low inertia as it is powered by a capacitor, not a battery. It has to operate in temperatures as low as -40C and high as +80C and must operate for at least 10 years.
